Installing tiles involves
prepping the surface, planning the layout, and securing the tiles with adhesive
. To achieve a professional finish, you must spread mortar in one direction, use leveling spacers, apply grout, and ensure at least ≥ 80% mortar coverage under each tile.
1. Preparation
A flawless tile installation begins with a clean, flat foundation.
Subfloor:
Remove any old flooring, scrape off debris, and sweep or vacuum thoroughly.
Levelling:
Check the surface with a straight edge. Fix deep grooves or dips with a self-leveling compound or cement patch.
Backer Board / Underlayment:
For timber subfloors or wet areas, install an uncoupling membrane or cement backer board to prevent cracks caused by natural structural movement.
2. Layout & Planning
Dry Fit:
Lay your tiles on the floor without adhesive, using tile spacers to check your alignment.
Avoid Slivers:
Adjust your starting centerlines so you don't end up with unnaturally thin or small cuts against the walls.
Snap Lines:
Use a chalk line to snap a perfectly straight grid that will guide your first rows.
3. Mixing & Applying Adhesive (Thin-Set)
Mixing:
Mix your tile adhesive (thin-set mortar) according to the manufacturer's instructions in a bucket until it reaches a peanut butter-like consistency.
Notched Trowel:
Use the flat side of your trowel to "burn in" (scrape a thin layer into) the substrate. Then, apply a thicker layer and comb through it with the notched side at a 45° angle.
Directional Troweling:
Comb the ridges in one straight direction (never in circles), as this ensures air escapes when the tile is pressed down.
Back-Butter:
Apply a very thin layer of mortar to the back of each tile for maximum adhesion.
4. Setting the Tiles
Placement:
Place the tile in the mortar and slide it perpendicular to the trowel ridges to collapse them.
Leveling:
Firmly press the tile down and check for a flush finish using a level or a tile lipage tuning system. Insert tile spacers to maintain uniform grout lines.
Clean As You Go:
Immediately wipe away any excess mortar that squeezes out between the tiles while it is still wet.
5. Grouting & Finishing
Wait:
Allow the tiles to set for 24 hours before removing the spacers and walking on the floor.
Grout Application:
Mix the grout. Use a rubber grout float held at a 45° angle to pack the grout firmly into the joints.
Clean-Up:
Hold the float at a 90° angle to scrape away the excess. Wait 15–20 minutes, then wipe the tiles with a damp sponge in circular motions to smooth the grout lines and clean the surface.
Polish:
Once a dry, hazy film forms on the tiles, polish the surface with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
